EATING FECES OUTSIDE

Posted: 19 May 2011 06:47 AM PDT

Q.. Why does my dog want to stop and eat the feces of geese, birds and other dogs whenever we go for a walk?

A.. coprophagy, the act of eating feces, is not unusual in the animal world. Dogs are joined by a long list of animals, including wolves and rabbits that engage in this behavior. In most cases, this habit will not harm a pet. However, if you want to break their pet of this habit, you can do so through leash training, pulling a dog away with a firm "no" whenever he makes a move to the forbidden substance. A halter head type collar is very effective in this type of leash training situation.

My dog has been sprayed by a skunk. What do I do?

My dog has been sprayed by a skunk. What do I do?

Although being "skunked" is stinky and scary, it is rarely harmful to dogs. Quick action after a dog is sprayed will make it much easier to remove the skunk odor faster. The first thing you should do after a pet is skunked is rinse out the dog's eyes to reduce the risk of irritation. After doing this, give the dog a thorough shampooing, followed by the application of a skunk odor remover.

Since skunks can carry rabies and other diseases, inspect the dog carefully to make sure he hasn't been bitten. In very few cases, a dog can have a negative reaction to skunk spray. So if your pet vomits repeatedly, or if his eyes, nose or gums become irritated, he should be taken to the vet at once
