Meerkat orphans snuggle up to cuddly toy

These five baby meerkats lost their mom shortly after they were born. Owner Steve Rowlands decided to give them a cuddly toy with a hot water bottle inside, to recreate some motherly experience for the little babies...

'The babies are a month old now and they lost their mum just two days after they were born,' said Mr Rowlands.

'We bought the toy to try and lessen the trauma for them and try and make things as natural as possible. We put it in with them and they just snuggled up to it like it was their mother.'

Transparent Sea Cucumber

Posted: 01 Dec 2009 11:24 AM PST

This bizarre transparent sea cucumber was recently spotted some 1.7 miles under the sea in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. And, according to a new report, there are many, many more where this came from.

Thousands of marine species eke out an existence in the ocean's pitch-black depths by feeding on the snow-like decaying matter that cascades down, and even sunken whale bones, according to a report released by the Census of Marine Life and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

So far the project has recorded 17,650 species living below 656 feet, the point where sunlight ceases. The findings are the latest update on a 10-year census of marine life.

This animal, Enypniastes, was recorded creeping forward on its many tentacles at a rate of about 0.9 inches per minute, while sweeping detritus-rich sediment into its mouth. Eventually the creature bloomed into a startlingly curved shape and swam away to find another meal.

As Robert S. Carney, an oceanographer at Louisiana State University and lead researcher on the census, commented, "Parts of the deep sea that we assumed were homogenous are actually quite complex."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

A Holiday Wish List

Posted: 01 Dec 2009 02:25 AM PST

Since we are in the midst of the holiday shopping season, I thought I would make a holiday wish list for cats. These are all special things that I have and love or things I wish I had. We bought all this stuff with our own monies!

The first Good Thing on our list is our Purrfect Post. This post has gotten some heavy-duty scratchin' for over three years now and it is still good as new! This year, we wish we could get the MONDO post!
Harley and I both love our Lotus Cat Tower from the Refined Feline. It is very pretty in our bedroom and it is great for climbing around on. Neither of us use the little cave at the bottom, but we keep some toys in there. This tree takes a few weeks for delivery.
This is our space ship, AKA our Hepper Pod! It is very cozy, and you can also remove the top. I always wanted a convertible!
This is my fancy Wetnoz bowl! I got it last year for Christmas from my grandma. I only use it for special occasions.
These are called Curve Perches from Urban Pet Haus. We do not have them, but they are going to the top of our list!
Here is another present on our wish list: a Cat Cave from Whisker Studio. I think I would feel safe from Harley if I had this little fortress to protect me!
We can't forget stocking stuffers! Harley and I both highly recommend the Cat Dancer. It only costs a few green papers, and it is one of our favorite toys of all time! I gave you an Amazon link, but you can find them in most pet stores.
We also love our Plague Ratsie! And our friend Baby Patches sells them in her store!
And of course we recommend anything in our very own shop called Curly Cat Designs, like this t-shirt that reads "I made you a cookie but I eated it" featuring Harley in his chef's cap! You can also get calendars, mugs, buttons, magnets and stickers with lots of different designs.
Happy Shopping!

Two Cats Tuesday: Crazy Moo and his Cube

Posted: 30 Nov 2009 09:05 PM PST

Happy Two Cats Tuesday! A while ago Moo got a kitty cube, and he still loves it! It's one of his favorite things to play with.Thing is, he doesn't "cube" like other kitties (I assume, anyway). Every morning when I get up, the cube is somewhere else in the living room, and inevitably turned over or on it's side somehow. What he does with the cube I never knew... until now! I caught him in the
