Thanks to Foxwood Farm for letting me share these marvelous photos of their 2010 colt Karl by  the Grand Prix stallion Blue Hors Romanov.  His mom is by Stedinger out of  a Prince Thatch mare.

Says the breeder: "He is probably the boldest foal I've ever had, with a freakishly good character and temperament. He's got nice, uphill conformation (strongly resembles Romanov) and if he's half as nice of a mover as his mother he will be one lovely horse."

I can hardly doubt it. Already that he looks like quite an athlete.

Foxwood Farm is an 85 acre farm in Charlotte, Vermont --  look at their news page and their mares page, these guys are doing it right!

How Does THAT Work? Getting SPADED!

Posted: 30 Sep 2010 01:00 AM PDT

I had to put on my THINKING cap for a LONG time to figure THIS one out. I ALREADY explained how BOY cats get NEUTERED. Many of you wanted to know, WHAT happens to GIRL cats? Well, they get SPADED. I have HEARD it called being "SPAYED" but this is a spelling ERROR.
See, GIRL cats have a LADY GARDEN in their INSIDES. The GARDEN must be pretty BIG, which is why Daisy has a big BELLIE!
This is what the GARDEN looks like on the INSIDE. There are just REGULAR plants inside there until a BEE comes along to FERTILIZE the plants. One day, your mom and dad will EXPLAIN the BIRDS and the BEES to you. The FERTILIZER part is CONFUSING.
NEXT, the seedling turns into a KITTEN! They get BORNED after a lot of DAYS. But since there are ALREADY a lot of KITTEN plants getting BORNED, this is not always a GOOD thing. Maybe SOME cats use MIRACLE GROW!
MORE kitten plants are not NEEDED because not all kittens have HOMES. So, ONE DAY, the GIRL cat goes to a GARDEN CENTER. The GARDEN GNOME will use his SPADE to FIX the GARDEN. This is why it is called being SPADED. The spade REMOVES the GARDEN!!! But do not WORRY, because the girlcat will be ASLEEP when it happens.
Daisy is very SHOCKED to learn the REAL truth. But she got SPADED many YEARS ago. She probably FORGOT all about the GARDEN CENTER! It is a GOOD thing I can FIGURE out how stuff WORKS!

Cute Dog Prayer

Generally, I don't want to bring religion onto this blog (Cute loves ALL of you!), but this was just too cute not to share... Jango bows his little head and prays with his daddy before he eats. What a sweet little trick. You can't help but smile -- especially when he's asking God to help him not chase the neighbor's cat.

Riley at Devon 2010: Return to the Dixon Oval

Posted: 29 Sep 2010 02:21 PM PDT

It's September and Riley returned to Devon for  second tour of the Dixon Oval. The weather held out, despite predictions of 90% rain. It was hard to video from ringside (horses in class obscured the view), and a gentleman standing next to me was amiably chatting and asking questions while I tried to watch. I gave up on the video and just watched -- what I have is below.

Prepwork
My big focus was keeping up Riley's energy level. As Felicitas VN said, you get a certain amount of time and then you run out of quarters. My trainer had back-to-back classes, which we knew early on. With no warmup, I hoped Riley would have an extra spark, but as I walked him around the schooling ring he was an old soul, relaxed and taking it all in. My trainer came out of the ring, we swapped horses, and back in she went.  Riley looked like a horse starting work -- it took him a few minutes to start to shine. And the class went so fast! Anyway, my trainer showed off his strengths, he performed well, and I was very proud.

Get'er done at Devon
I have to say a word about my trainer -- and the word is ENERGY. She made it all happen. No bragging, no complaining, no mention of how much work this all was -- but I saw her take two horses to Devon and it was pretty much non-stop-foot-on-the-gas, yet she was tireless.

My thought on witnessing this first hand?  Whew.

Come to think of it, I guess that sums up the past few days, generally. Whew!
