Japanese Ink & Brush Artist By Masami Fujikawa Paints Cats

Posted: 27 Sep 2011 04:23 AM PDT

I am in love with ink & Brush(Sumie) cat portrait by Masami Fujikawa. She lives and works in Osaka. She specializes in traditional ink & brush painting. She also uses Washi(Rice Paper), traditional Japanese paper which is art form itself. Each Washi is handmade and there are thousands of variations and require a lot of skills. You know sometimes a cat makes a special face that we all love but so unique to each cat, I feel like Fujikawa capture that moment.

She also adds poems alongside with her cats mostly praising how wonderful cats are. When you first look at her paintings, you will notice the wonderful expression of each cats, then your eyes start to notice her techniques. She is a master of brush techniques, it seems each stroke has a propose. What amazes me is her skill of utilizing the nature of Washi and ink, Washi is super absorbent paper, also very unforgiven. If you make a mistake then that is it. Very similar to watercolor. I love how she draw cat's fur. When you look at closely, you will see how naturally color spreads on to the paper creating wonderfully intricate hair.
