Posted: 22 Mar 2010 08:50 AM PDT Fox Terriers are one of the most willing to please breeds at the same time as being one of the most self-forgetful breeds when they get their own head and are truly a dog that won’t let go of its bone. That is, until he becomes once more aware of his owner scolding him at which time he reverts to being the people-pleaser which is his true preoccupation. So basically the fox can be a bit of a schizophrenic but always in an endearing kind of way. Essential facts about Fox Terriers are: - They come with two different types of coat, one wiry, the other smooth. The Smooth actually looks rather cool and sometimes debonair despite his often edgy temperament. The Wiry, on the other hand, looks and often acts like a total ragamuffin, endearing himself to kids and adults alike. When hunting they can be an hilarious sight as they lift off vertically from amongst thick and tall forest undergrowth in order to give themselves a chance of sighting their prey. -The ground colors of Foxes are tan or black and tan while the amount of white varies considerably. The nose, pad, lips and eye-rims are invariably pigmented black or near black. General Observations -The Fox Terrier is an English melange of terriers from Derbyshire, Wales and the North East, bred specifically to have the stamina to keep pace with scent hounds and then have the sudden spurt of adrenalin to flush out or finish of its prey. With very little sense of fear, the Fox Terrier will go where a hound couldn’t (e.g. down a fox hole) and where a hound wouldn’t, through fear. A Fox Terrier would take on a buffalo without any thought for its own safety. Fox terriers can be one of the most rewarding of family pets due to their mixture of unbridled excitability and enthusiasm for escaping and exploring offset by their quandary over wanting to please their owner. This can make for the most hilarious of circumstances as you can observe their instinctive and emotional functions vying with each other for supremacy. |
