Posted: 16 Nov 2010 10:27 AM PST The first time I tasted the Milo McFlurry from McDonald's, it was by chance. I love Milo as a drink so when B surprised me with a yummy cup of Milo McFlurry, it was love at first taste and I was completely hooked! The next day I had another cup...and the day after that, another one! This went on for an entire week and now every chance I get, I'd surely ask B to bring one home for me. All it took was that very first taste. And now, this sinfully sweet Milo McFlurry is all I think about every waking hour. Talk about needing treatment for addiction right? Addiction can be defined as an extremely challenging disease, which is hard to treat. However, thanks to the ease and availability of addiction treatments nowadays, patients are presented with a wide variety of options to aid in the treatment of their particular disease. From nicotine and drugs to alcohol and sex, addiction comes in many forms including the addiction to food; specifically sugary sweet food! Apparently, the first step in treating any addiction is recognizing that it is a disease and understanding that treatment is available. I'm not saying I have a food addiction but the Milo McFlurry continues to haunt me. And now, if I don't have it at least once a week, I'd get all grumpy! Withdrawal symptoms perhaps? Food addiction is not as common as the others mentioned above. It is however very real and consuming too much fatty or sweet food can actually affect your brain chemistry; leading to possible withdrawal symptoms if you don't satisfy your craving for something sweet. Here are some of the symptoms of food addiction. * Obsessed with thoughts about food. * Eats to de-stress. * Feels anxious while eating. * Overeats simply because the food is there. * Eats everything on the plate even when they feel full. * Feels guilty after pigging out. * Goes on a food binge after dieting or after trying to cut back. * Sees food as something to be avoided or as harmful. Having one or more of these signs does not confirm your status as a food addict so don't go into panic mode just yet! The best step to take is consult your Doctor for affirmation. If you are truly addicted to food, your doctor will guide you in seeking help and treatment from addiction treatment specialists who are willing to get you back on track towards healthy and non-addictive eating behaviour. Food is a staple but the abundance of delicious delights today makes it really easy for one to fall into food addiction. Don't fret however for you can still enjoy your favourite desserts. Just remember to practise moderation in everything you put inside your mouth. Today is Hari Raya Aidil Adha and you know what that means - plenty of food including sweet delicious cookies and cakes to celebrate this holiday! So be merry and be happy and do try not to overeat! -FC Scoreboard points for my first THREE commenters- |
